Obverse description A beaded outer rim frames a circular legend in Latin script reading STADT NORTHEIM I/HANNOVER, flanked by two circular ornaments, with the date 1918 positioned at the base between two ornamental stops. An inner beaded circle encloses a full-length standing figure of Roland, the medieval guardian knight, depicted in armour and holding a sword diagonally across his body, standing upon a decorative plinth. The design references the traditional Roland statues found in German municipal heraldry, asserting civic identity and authority.

Additional information

Northeim's zinc notgeld issues of 1918 belong to the first wave of German municipal emergency coinage, authorized as the wartime metal shortage stripped copper and nickel from civilian circulation. Zinc was itself a war material, and municipalities scrambling for it often competed directly with munitions production quotas — which explains the erratic output volumes seen across comparable issues from Lower Saxony towns of similar size.

The Funck reference distinguishes at least two die varieties here, catalogued separately under Men18#23738.7 and .8.
