Reverse description The reverse of this octagonal Kriegsnotgeld token features the large numeral 50 prominently displayed in the center field, enclosed within a raised rope-twist inner circle. The curved legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE arcs around the upper periphery within the beaded border, with three five-pointed stars arranged in a triangular group at the lower field below the rope circle. A continuous border of raised beads frames the entire design along all eight sides, consistent with the obverse treatment.

Additional information

Nordenham's 1918 iron notgeld was issued as German municipal authorities scrambled to fill a coin vacuum created by wartime metal requisitioning — by late 1918, virtually all copper and nickel coinage had been absorbed by the Imperial war economy, leaving civilian circulation nearly empty. Iron was the stopgap of last resort, cheap and abundant from weapons production but deeply unpopular with the public for its tendency to rust in pocket and purse.

Nordenham itself was a minor North Sea port town, and its notgeld issues are among the more obscure of the Lower Saxon municipals. The Funck 382.3 designation places this among multiple die variants for the type.
