Neumünster's Bankverein issued this iron notgeld piece during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in 1920, when hoarding of metal coinage and postwar supply disruptions left municipalities and private institutions scrambling to fill the gap abandoned by central authority. Iron was the pragmatic choice — cheap, available, and sufficiently unfamiliar as a coinage metal to discourage melting.
The Funck reference places this among the documented Schleswig-Holstein private issues, a category that saw considerable variety in issuing body, with banks, municipalities, and industrial concerns all producing parallel emergency currency within the same towns simultaneously.
