Neuhaus am Rennweg issued this notgeld piece in 1918 as the imperial supply chain collapsed and Reichsbank metal coinage effectively vanished from everyday commerce. The town sat in the small principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, one of the minor German states that ceased to exist entirely within months of this coin's striking, dissolved by the November Revolution of 1918. Zinc was the default emergency metal by this point — copper and nickel long since redirected to the war effort.
