Neisse — now Nysa in southwestern Poland — was a Catholic episcopal seat for centuries, and the "Bischofhof" designation references the bishop's court that defined the city's identity long before the Weimar emergency coinage crisis forced municipalities to strike their own small change. The aluminium Notgeld issues of 1921 emerged because postwar metal shortages and inflation had driven silver and copper coins out of circulation entirely, hoarded or melted well before hyperinflation peaked in 1923.
