Comments

Ziegenrück was a tiny administrative district in Thuringia, and its participation in the Kleingeldersatz wave of 1921 reflects just how thoroughly the postwar coin shortage had penetrated even the smallest German jurisdictions. With silver and nickel coinage hoarded or melted, local authorities across Germany were legally permitted — briefly — to issue their own fractional emergency money, producing the sprawling Notgeld phenomenon that today fills entire specialized catalogs.

Wiedemannsche Druckerei AG in nearby Saalfeld handled production for several Thuringian district issues during this period, which occasionally creates attribution confusion between notes of neighboring Kreise sharing identical typographic styles.
