Wagner & Englert was a metalware manufacturer based in Mettmann, in the Rhineland industrial corridor — precisely the kind of mid-sized firm that issued notgeld during the early 1920s not out of civic obligation but simple necessity, when Reichsbank coin supply collapsed under inflationary pressure and workers needed something to make change with at the factory gate or company canteen. Brass-plated iron was the workaround of the cash-strapped issuer: cheaper than true brass, still passable in circulation for the short term these tokens were ever expected to last.
