Menden's 1919 iron notgeld issue belongs to the wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany in the immediate aftermath of the November Armistice, when the central government's coin supply collapsed and individual cities, towns, and even private firms were left to provision their own small change. Iron was the default fallback — copper and nickel had been commandeered for the war effort years earlier and stocks remained depleted.
