A large white circle at centre carries the bold numeral '50' above the denomination in Gothic script 'Pfennig'. To the left and right of the circle, the validity restriction 'GÜLTIG NUR IM AUSSTELLUNGSGEBÄUDE' is set in black Gothic lettering. The printer's imprint 'W. J. This note was issued specifically to accompany the Marburger Briefmarken und Notgeld Ausstellung — a philatelic and notgeld exhibition held in Marburg in 1921. Exhibition-tied notgeld of this kind were produced primarily as collector pieces from the moment of issue, part of the broader Serienscheine phenomenon in which German municipalities exploited collector demand to generate revenue with minimal risk of redemption. W. J. Becker's Kunstanstalt, a local Marburg printer, produced it, keeping the entire enterprise municipal in a notably self-contained way.
Designer Kurt Schmelz is a name almost entirely confined to regional Hessian printing work of this period.
