| Obverse description | Polychrome letterpress design framed by a decorative border of fir branches with red pinecones. At centre, the Thuringian lion coat of arms — a rampant red lion with white-and-red striped body on a blue field — flanks the denomination numeral '50' on each side in ornate Gothic script, with the legend 'Thüringer Leu / Dem Reiche treu' arranged left and right. A caption in script above the shield reads 'Das Thüringer Wappen am Turm der Leuchtenburg bei Kahla Saale ab 9.
