Lauingen issued this iron notgeld piece in 1918 as Germany's wartime metal requisitions drained copper and nickel from municipal circulation. Iron was the unglamorous fallback — prone to rust, poorly received by the public, and abandoned almost as soon as hostilities ended. Most surviving examples show surface oxidation even in collection-grade pieces, which is characteristic of the type rather than evidence of heavy handling.
