Beschrijving voorzijde A continuous pearl border follows the octagonal periphery of the flan. The issuing authority's legend BURGERMEISTERAMT LANK A/RH curves along the upper half of the field in raised Latin letters. Prominently centered in the field is the large denomination numeral 50, below which appears a countermark serial number (516 in this example), stamped in smaller figures. The design is plain and utilitarian, consistent with the emergency coinage (Notgeld) conventions of the early Weimar period.

Aanvullende informatie

Lank am Rhein, a small Rhine village now absorbed into Meerbusch, issued this zinc notgeld piece during the acute coin shortages of World War I, when the German imperial government had stripped copper and nickel from circulation for war production. Municipal authorities across Germany were left to fill the gap themselves, with wildly inconsistent results. Zinc was a practical if unglamorous choice — abundant, workable, but prone to corrosion, which accounts for the poor surface survival rate on most examples from this type.
