Lichtenhorst was a German prisoner-of-war camp in Lower Saxony, and its canteen scrip belongs to a category of emergency money — Lagergeld — produced specifically to prevent prisoners from accumulating Reichsmarks that could theoretically fund an escape or be passed to outside contacts. The system was deliberately closed: scrip earned inside could only be spent inside, at the camp canteen.
