Kreissparkasse notgeld from the Harburg district, issued during the inflationary spiral of 1921 before the hyperinflation of 1922–23 rendered such denominations effectively worthless within months. District savings banks like this one were authorized to issue emergency currency when the central supply of small-denomination coins and bills collapsed — a gap that produced thousands of distinct local issues across Weimar Germany, most with extremely limited geographic circulation.
The designer credit to Lütkens is one of the few firm details the piece carries beyond its issuing authority.
