Neustadt am Rübenberge is a small market town in the Hannover region, and its Kreissparkasse — a district savings bank rather than a municipal or state institution — was among thousands of local bodies that issued Notgeld during the inflationary spiral of the early Weimar period. The 1921 wave of small-denomination Kleingeldersatz notes was driven by a genuine coin shortage, not yet the hyperinflation that would follow in 1923.
Appelhans Verlag in Braunschweig was a commercial printer that handled a considerable volume of regional Notgeld contracts across Lower Saxony. Their output was competent but not engraved — lithographic work throughout.
