Kreissparkasse Oberbarnim was the district savings bank serving the Oberbarnim county, with its administrative seat at Bad Freienwalde on the Oder. This note belongs to the vast wave of Notgeld issued by German municipalities, savings banks, and civic bodies during the hyperinflationary pressures of 1921, when small-denomination Reichsmark coinage had effectively vanished from everyday commerce through hoarding and metal speculation.
Aug. Arendt was a local Eberswalde printer — not a specialist security firm — which was entirely typical for this tier of emergency issues. The designer credits for Hermann and Huisken suggest a split commission, possibly one handling the typographic layout and the other the pictorial elements.
