A circular legend surrounding the central device reads GILTIG BIS 1 JAHR NACH FRIEDENSSCHLUSS, indicating validity until one year after the conclusion of peace, separated by five-pointed star ornaments. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border at the rim, characteristic of wartime Notgeld emergency coinage.

Additional information

Kösching is a small Bavarian market town near Ingolstadt, and its 1917 zinc notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of emergency coinage produced across Germany when the Imperial government's wartime metal requisitions stripped municipalities of the copper and nickel needed for everyday transactions. Zinc was the compromise — cheap, available, and deeply unpopular in circulation due to its tendency to corrode and seize in vending machines. Local authorities accepted the logistical headache anyway; the alternative was no small change at all.
