Gera-Debschwitz was a working-class suburb of Gera in Thuringia, and consumer cooperatives of this type — the *eingetragene Genossenschaft mit beschränkter Haftpflicht* form — were common fixtures of German industrial communities before and during the First World War. When small-denomination coin vanished from circulation after 1914, many such cooperatives issued their own Notgeld rather than lose retail trade to cash shortages.
