Großbreitenbach sits in the Ilm district of Thuringia, and by 1921 the town's small craft and decorative arts workshops — what the Germans were calling Kleinkunstindustrie — were hemorrhaging coin along with everyone else during the Weimar inflation emergency. This notgeld was issued by Carl Günther Tresselt specifically to keep local commerce moving when Reichsbank coin simply wasn't available in small denominations.
Paul Neu was a Munich-based commercial artist who contributed designs to numerous Thuringian notgeld series during this period. Printing was handled by Carl O. Heyder in nearby Gehren, a short distance from Großbreitenbach — an unusually local production chain for notgeld of this quality.
