Issued by the Mechanische Baumwollspinnerei und Weberei Kempten — a cotton spinning and weaving mill in the Bavarian town of Kempten — this is a piece of private emergency currency, or Notgeld, produced when the collapse of the imperial monetary system after 1918 left industrial employers unable to make payroll in official coin. Factory-issued Notgeld of this type circulated internally among workers, redeemable at company stores or against wages. Zinc was the default material by necessity, not preference; copper and nickel had been absorbed by the war effort years earlier.
