50 Pfennig Kreis Greifenhagen

Greifenhagen was a small rural Kreis on the right bank of the Oder, south of Stettin, and like hundreds of German administrative districts in 1917 it issued its own emergency currency because the Imperial government had effectively ceased supplying adequate coin for everyday transactions — wartime metal requisitions had gutted the circulating stock of nickel and copper. The Kreisausschuss, the elected district committee, was among the lowest tiers of government authorized to issue Notgeld, which partly explains the modest local print run from H. Susenbeth, a Stettin commercial printer with no specialized banknote background.

Small-town Pomeranian Notgeld from 1917 saw heavy daily use and survives in fine condition only rarely.
