Ludwigstein castle, perched above the Werra valley near Witzenhausen, was purchased in 1919 by the German Youth Movement — specifically the Freideutsche Jugend — making it the first castle in Germany acquired and operated by a youth organization. This Notgeld issue was produced directly by the preservation society to fund ongoing restoration work on the medieval structure, a genuinely unusual case of emergency currency being used not for a municipal payroll crisis but for cultural conservation.
The Freideutsche Jugend connection gives this note a specific political edge: the movement had held its famous Meissner gathering in 1913, and by 1921 was already fragmenting along ideological lines.
