| Aversbeschreibung | The octagonal field displays the civic coat of arms of Ilmenau at centre, featuring a heraldic shield flanked by two fortified towers and surmounted by foliage, all rendered in low relief. A continuous inner pearl border encircles the central device, separating it from the surrounding legend. The circular legend reads LEBENSMITTEL-KOMMISSION in the upper arc and ILMENAU in the lower arc, each separated by six-pointed star ornaments. An outer pearl border follows the octagonal periphery of the token. |

| Reversbeschreibung | The octagonal reverse features the large numeral '50' prominently displayed at centre within an inner rope or twisted-cord border circle. The circular legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE (meaning 'small change replacement token') runs between the rope border and an outer pearl border that follows the octagonal periphery. Three small five-pointed stars are evenly spaced in the lower field between the rope circle and the outer pearl border, serving as decorative stops. |

Issued by Ilmenau's municipal food commission in 1917, this notgeld piece reflects the collapse of Germany's wartime supply chain in the third year of the First World War. The British naval blockade had strangled imports so effectively that local authorities across the Reich were forced to organize rationing at the municipal level — and to issue their own emergency currency to manage it. Iron was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had long since been requisitioned for shell casings.
