Hindenburg Oberschlesien — renamed from Zabrze in 1915 to honor Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg following German military victories on the Eastern Front — issued this emergency coinage as the wartime metal shortage stripped conventional currency from circulation. Iron notgeld of this type was a stopgap measure adopted by dozens of German municipalities in 1918, but issues tied to towns renamed mid-war carry an additional layer of political urgency. The renaming itself was controversial; the town reverted to Zabrze after Poland annexed Upper Silesia following the 1921 plebiscite.
