Additional information

Heilbronn issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1918 as the German imperial coinage system buckled under wartime metal requisitioning — copper and nickel had been redirected to munitions production years earlier, leaving municipalities to improvise their own emergency currency in whatever base materials remained available. Zinc was among the least desirable options, prone to corrosion and surface oxidation, which accounts for why specimens in genuinely clean condition are harder to locate than the mintage figures alone would suggest.
