Hattingen issued this zinc notgeld piece in 1917 as the German war economy systematically stripped copper and nickel from civilian coinage. The municipal series from this Ruhr town followed emergency ordinances permitting local authorities to produce subsidiary currency — zinc being one of the few metals not yet entirely commandeered by the military-industrial apparatus by that point in the war.
