Hartung & Co. was a department store in Kiel that issued this note during the Notgeld crisis of 1919, when chronic coin shortages forced municipalities, businesses, and private firms across Germany to print their own small-denomination scrip. Retailers were among the most pragmatic issuers — they needed change to function and couldn't wait for the Reichsbank to supply it.
Commercial Notgeld from private firms is considerably scarcer than municipal issues, simply because smaller print runs were ordered and far fewer survived outside the immediate locality.
