Hamm's 1918 iron Pfennig issue belongs to the vast German Kriegsgeld and Notgeld output that municipalities scrambled to produce as wartime metal requisitions drained copper and nickel from circulation entirely. By mid-1918, the imperial coinage system had effectively collapsed at the local level, leaving cities to commission their own emergency pieces through whatever industrial capacity remained. Iron was the default — cheap, abundant, and already familiar from the Reich's own wartime subsidiary coinage introduced in 1915.
The Funck reference places this among a documented series of Hamm issues, suggesting the city struck multiple denominations rather than a single stopgap piece.
