A rope or cable circle encloses the central field, within which the large numeral '50' is prominently struck. A. Riebecksche Montanwerke was one of the Saale region's principal brown coal (lignite) operations, and like many large German industrial firms during the post-WWI metal shortages and monetary instability, it issued its own notgeld coinage to pay workers when official small change dried up. Iron was the practical choice — base metal stocks were more accessible than copper or zinc in a country still rationing materials after the war.
