A. Riebecksche Montanwerke was one of the Saale region's principal brown coal (lignite) operations, and like many large German industrial firms during the post-WWI metal shortages and monetary instability, it issued its own notgeld coinage to pay workers when official small change dried up. Iron was the practical choice — base metal stocks were more accessible than copper or zinc in a country still rationing materials after the war.
