Bad Blankenburg's 1921 notgeld series takes its name from Günther von Schwarzburg, the anti-king elected by dissident German princes in 1349 as a rival to Charles IV — a brief, failed bid for the imperial throne that ended with Günther's death, possibly by poison, just months after his election. The Schwarzburg dynasty itself held Bad Blankenburg and the surrounding region for centuries, which gives the naming choice genuine local resonance rather than decorative medievalism.
Wiedemannsche Druckerei in Saalfeld produced a substantial volume of Thuringian municipal notgeld during the inflation period. The DeNG reference indicates two known variants within this denomination.
