Ilmenau's Goethe connection is legitimate and well-documented — the poet visited repeatedly over several decades, conducted geological fieldwork in the hills above the town, and the Hermannstein outcrop was among his known haunts. The municipal authority clearly leveraged this when commissioning Max Bechstein's designs for the series, which gave the notgeld more local identity than most Thuringian issues of the period.
Wiedemannsche Druckerei in Saalfeld handled both the printing and engraving. The red colour variant distinguishes this 50 Pfennig from otherwise similar denominations in the same Goethe series.
