Kahla, a small Thuringian town best known for its porcelain industry, was among hundreds of German municipalities that turned to local notgeld during the inflationary spiral of the early 1920s when Reichsbank coin and small-denomination notes disappeared from circulation almost entirely. The "Economics Series" designation suggests this was one of several thematically grouped issues rather than a one-off stopgap — a common approach among more organized municipal issuers who also had an eye on the collector market, which by 1921 had become a genuine secondary consideration.
J. P. Himmer in Augsburg handled a substantial volume of notgeld printing for municipalities across southern Germany during this period, and their work on these smaller denominations was generally clean and consistent.
