Gritzner's Durlach factory issued these zinc notgeld tokens during the acute small-change shortages of 1917–1918, when the imperial government had stripped coinage metals for war production and workers needed something to make change in the factory canteen. Gritzner was by then one of Germany's principal sewing machine manufacturers, having pivoted heavily to munitions and military equipment contracts — the very war effort that created the metal shortage funding their own substitute currency.
