The Kyffhäuserbund was one of Germany's largest veterans' organizations, drawing membership from the imperial wars of 1866, 1870–71, and 1914–18. This 50 Pfennig note was issued during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s, when municipal bodies, private firms, and associations of every kind were legally permitted to issue Notgeld to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation. A veterans' fraternity issuing emergency currency was unusual but not unprecedented in that period.
The Kyffhäuser monument in Thuringia — central to the organization's identity — gave the Bund its name and its nationalist mythology, rooted in the Barbarossa legend.
