Acetonfabrik Burghausen was one of Germany's early industrial acetone producers, and like hundreds of German firms during the acute coin shortages of World War I and its aftermath, it issued its own iron Notgeld tokens to pay workers when official coinage had been hoarded out of circulation. Factory-issued pieces of this type were purely functional — struck to facilitate wage payments and canteen transactions on-site, with no expectation they would circulate beyond the plant gates.
Iron was the material of necessity, not choice. By 1917–1918, copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort, leaving iron as the only viable option for emergency token production.
