Bockenem is a small town in Lower Saxony, and this note is about as local as Notgeld gets — printed by the town's own print shop, Buchdruckerei Heinrich Rehmann, rather than contracted out to one of the specialist emergency currency printers that handled most municipal issues of the period. Self-printed Notgeld from the issuing town itself is less common than it might seem; most smaller municipalities still relied on regional commercial printers.
By 1921 the acute coin shortage driving early Notgeld had largely passed, but many towns continued issuing for collector demand as much as practical need.
