| Reverse description | The central field features a detailed depiction of a historic full-rigged sailing vessel, a Hanseatic cog or galleon, shown underway on stylized waves with sails set and flags flying from the masts. The date '19 21' is divided on either side of the ship's hull at the waterline. A circular legend in Fraktur blackletter script surrounds the design, reading the traditional Bremen mercantile motto 'Buten und binnen wagen und winnen' (Outside and inside, venture and win), with star or lozenge separators punctuating the inscription. The entire composition is enclosed within a beaded border. The nautical imagery reflects Bremen's proud heritage as a major North Sea trading and seafaring city. |
