Issued by a provincial cooperative bank in Bitterfeld — a small Saxon industrial town whose chemical and mining industries made it a significant wartime production center — this piece belongs to the vast emergency coinage wave that swept Germany from 1916 onward as nickel and copper were requisitioned for munitions.
