Elektricitätswerk Südwest AG was one of several regional power utilities in greater Berlin that resorted to issuing private emergency coinage — Notgeld — during the acute metal and currency shortages of the early 1920s. With the Reichsbank unable to supply sufficient small-denomination coin for everyday transactions, utility companies, municipalities, and private firms across Germany briefly became de facto minters. Zinc was the material of necessity: copper and nickel had been largely consumed or hoarded since the war years.
The Mehl references cite two distinct catalogue editions listing this piece, suggesting it attracted collector attention early in German Notgeld scholarship.
