| Obverse description | Central field bears the municipal coat of arms of Bergedorf, depicting a tree above a divided lower section, rendered in low relief within a plain shield. The legend STADT BERGEDORF arcs along the left and upper periphery in raised Latin characters, and the date 1917 appears in the lower field beneath the shield. The entire design is bordered by a continuous inner ring of raised dots following the octagonal flan, creating a decorative beaded border characteristic of World War I German notgeld issues. |

Bergedorf occupied an unusual administrative position until 1868, jointly governed by Hamburg and Lübeck for nearly four centuries before Hamburg bought out Lübeck's share for 200,000 marks. By 1917, the town was issuing its own notgeld as zinc shortages and wartime metal requisitioning made standard coinage impossible to maintain in circulation — municipal authorities across Germany filled the gap themselves rather than wait for a central solution that wasn't coming.
