The denomination numeral '50' appears in large bold type at both upper corners, each accompanied by the word 'Pfennig.' in vertical orientation. A rectangular cartouche at the top centre contains the serial number prefix and number, while below it a block of Fraktur text sets out the payment obligation of Bankhaus Janßen, Westerland; the large Fraktur legend 'Fünfzig Pfennig' dominates the lower half of the note. The place and date 'Westerland, den 1. April 1919.' appear at the foot, above the printer's imprint 'Druck Seimar Bayer Berlin S.O 36' outside the outer border. |

Bankhaus Janßen was a private banking house operating on the island of Sylt — Westerland being its main town — and this 50 Pfennig note belongs to the vast wave of privately issued Notgeld that flooded Germany in 1919 as coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. Municipal authorities, businesses, and local banks all filled the gap. A private bank issuing its own fractional currency was entirely legal under the circumstances, if administratively chaotic.
Selmar Bayer of Berlin handled a substantial volume of Notgeld printing contracts during this period, supplying issuers across northern Germany with competent if workmanlike results.
