50 Pfennig Bank für Handel und Industrie

The Bank für Handel und Industrie was a major German commercial bank — the Darmstädter Bank, as it was commonly known — but this note came not from the Frankfurt or Berlin headquarters, but from the Greiz branch, a small industrial town in the Thuringian Vogtland. Branch-level Notgeld issues from named commercial banks are considerably less common than municipal emergency notes, and the Greiz connection places this squarely in the wave of small-denomination paper flooding the region after wartime coin hoarding stripped the country of circulating metal.

Löffler & Co. were a local Greiz firm, which kept production close — unusual for a bank of this institutional standing.
