Annener Gussstahlwerk AG was a cast steel works in Annen, a district of Witten in Westphalia, operating through Germany's industrial heartland. Like many private firms during the First World War and its chaotic aftermath, the company issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — to compensate for the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage that resulted from metal requisitioning and hoarding. Zinc was the material of necessity, not choice; copper and nickel had long since been redirected to the war effort.
