Fagus G.M.B.H. was the shoe-last manufacturer whose Alfeld factory, designed by Walter Gropius in 1911, would later become a UNESCO World Heritage Site — though in 1917 the concern was more pressing: wartime zinc shortages had pulled copper and nickel from circulation, forcing hundreds of German firms to issue their own emergency coinage. This piece is one of thousands of Kriegsgeld notgeld types produced by private industry to keep small transactions moving when the Reichsbank could not supply adequate small change.
The Menzel catalog distinguishes at least four varieties of this type, this being the fourth.
