Aibling — now Bad Aibling — issued this notgeld piece during the severe metal shortages of the final year of the First World War, when the imperial government had long since requisitioned copper and nickel for war production. Iron coinage of this type was struck by hundreds of German municipalities filling the gap left by withdrawn Reichsbank small change. The Funck reference places this among a numbered series from the district, suggesting multiple denominations were produced under the same emergency authorization.
