Aachen's municipal iron coinage of 1920 emerged from the catastrophic shortage of small-denomination Reichsmünzen that followed the war, with cities and towns across Germany authorized to issue their own Notgeld to keep local commerce moving. Aachen, sitting directly on the Belgian and Dutch borders, faced particular pressure: cross-border trade made the absence of reliable small change a daily practical crisis, not merely an inconvenience.
