Leipzig's city council issued Notgeld in large quantities during the inflationary chaos that followed the First World War, and the 50 Pfennig denominations were among the most practically necessary — small enough for everyday transactions at a moment when the Reichsbank could not keep subsidiary coinage in circulation. Metal had been systematically requisitioned for the war effort, and small-denomination paper filled the gap left by vanished copper and nickel.
Leipzig printed its own emergency issues locally, which was common for larger German municipalities with established printing infrastructure. The city's notes were generally well-produced by Notgeld standards, though the series was extensive enough that quality varies across individual printings.
