Strelitz i.M. — the older of the two towns that were merged to form Neustrelitz in 1933 — issued this Notgeld note during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1922, when municipal and commercial entities across Germany were forced to produce their own small-denomination emergency currency to compensate for a catastrophic shortage of official coinage and low-value Reichsbank notes. The Rat der Stadt, the town council, held the legal authority to authorize such issues under the broadly permissive emergency currency provisions of the period.
Strelitz had been the former residential capital of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a status that dissolved with the 1918 abdication.
