Comments

Gießen was among hundreds of German municipalities that issued their own emergency paper fractional currency during the First World War, when coin metal was requisitioned and small change became genuinely scarce. These Notgeld pieces were printed locally — this one by Frühl, a Gießen firm — giving them a distinctly regional character quite different from the mass-produced issues of larger state banks.

Municipal Notgeld of this type was theoretically redeemable at the issuing city's treasury, though in practice redemption was inconsistent and many notes simply never returned.
